Tribal peoples must raise their children a certain way, lest they perish.
This is true of all cultures, even ours. I think this is part of why people have such trouble completely embracing the Continuum Concept, because to do so means to be other than we are..... to super-value connection, kinship bonds, interdependence, instinct and intuition....values almost completely contrary to the most basic memes underlying our hierarchical society.
As individuals we adopted, and enact, those memes because of our continuum expectations...our need to do what is "done".
Our culture places us in the really icky position of having our continuum expectations thwart our continuum needs. Our expectations drive us to do what is "done", to learn from watching others, yet doing what is "done" goes against our needs for physical contact, connection, and support, just to name a few things.
